Falcon Cove Girl’s MSAA Soccer Champions!
On December 19th, the Falcon Cove Middle School girl’s soccer team won their first Soccer County Championship, by defeating Coral Springs Middle School by a score of 6 to 2. The air was crisp and so were the Lady Falcons. Coach Hoopes and Coach Stupp, the Lady Falcons coaches, wanted them to start out fast and furious. The Lady Falcons did just that. Donish Cole-Henry came out strong and scored the first goal of the night in the first 3 minutes of the game. Heather Hastbacka scored the next goal from beyond the 18 ft. line, shooting a direct kick above the goalie in the right corner of the goal, unbelievable shot! The Lady Falcons took the lead into the half by a score of 2 to 1. Coral Springs Middle School is a fast and aggressive team. We knew 2 goals wouldn’t be enough to beat this team.
The Lady Falcons controlled the ball most of the second half. Jaclyn Stermer drilled the ball past the goalie into the left side of the goal, making the score 3 to 1. But, Jaclyn wasn’t done there. Jaclyn had a break away goal and made the score 4 to 1. Coral Springs made a penalty shot which made the score, 4 to 2. That would be the last time Coral Springs would score. Heather Hastbacka assisted two more goals off of her perfectly placed corner kicks. Cassandra Etzig and Rachel Swadlow were recipients of these passes and were able to score a goal each making the score 6 to 2.
The Lady Falcons were aggressive and on the attack, but their defense was determined not get beat. Kaitlyn Stolzenberg, Nathalie Alvarez, Caroline Fernandez, and Amanda Kreitzer and mid fielder Sara Perlman, played inspired defense against a very strong Coral Springs team. One of the Lady Falcons unsung heroes is of course their goalie, Megan Mahoney, who played phenomenal all season long and who played one of the most integral parts in helping get the Lady Falcons to the County Championships. Megan had an amazing Semi Final game against Silver Trail, in which she made incredible one on one saves. This was a true team effort from the start of the season to the end which also included great play from Andrea Contreras, Emilia Duque, Elena Vallalta, Sydney Villalba, Sari Kreutzer, Brooke White, Brooke Lazarus, Katherine Macneal, Angela Hogan, Michaela Kopecki, Kristina Sencion, and Natalia Agualimpia.
The Lady Falcons are made up of mainly 6th and 7th graders. There were only five 8th graders on the entire team, and only 4 of them were starters. All season long, they competed against teams that were majority 8th graders. This is what makes this season even more special. In our community, school athletics are being compromised. There is pressure out there by soccer Club Teams, for these young women athletes not to come out and play the sport they love and represent their school. Getting these great young athletes to come and play for their school is a struggle all the Middle School Athletic Programs are facing. Despite all this, the soccer players on this team had something to prove. Many of the 8th graders did not come out for the team. This left the Lady Falcons without veteran leadership, but their team captains, Heather Hastbacka, Sara Perlman, and Kaitlyn Stolzenberg were ready to prove that they were just as good, if not better, than any team that had a majority of 8th graders. The determination and desire the Lady Falcons had to be the 2008 Soccer County Champions was an amazing sight to watch throughout the season. The Lady Falcons had an unbelievable season. Their record of 11 wins and only 1 loss is an outstanding achievement. In two seasons the Lady Falcons have only lost two games.
Falcon Cove has been open for 8 years now. And in this short time, Coach Hoopes has been able to coach 4 championship teams in two different sports (three for volleyball and now one in soccer). Coach Stupp has coached teams to two volleyball and, now, one soccer championship. It has truly been a fantastic season, one that will never be forgotten!
Falcon Cove Boy’s MSAA Soccer Champions!
Congratulations to the Falcon Cove Boys Soccer Team! The boys won the Broward County Soccer CHAMPIONSHIP on December 19th 2007 in a thrilling and exciting game against Rickards Middle School. The team started off fast and scored the first goal of the game in the opening 3 minutes, when 8th grader Mario Sarmiento sent an excellent cross off of a corner kick, sending the ball across to 8th grader Martin Giordona who finished with authority, putting the Falcons up 1-0. The game remained tight for most of the evening. Rickards battled back with a counter attack and managed to beat the Falcon Cove defense, tying the game at 1-1. The second half remained scoreless, though the falcons had many opportunities to go up in the game. The defense of Enrique Aguerrevere, Nico Citcioglu, Rhys Williams, Novaro Salazar, and Goal Keeper Joseph Ghitis held strong the entire game. Jesus Gonzalez, Alejandro Jergovic, and Johnny Nunes also played excellent for the Falcons. 8th Grader Nick Kaupas added plenty of offensive attempts as many shots were on their way in the net, but would bounce off the "crossbar." The game went into a five minute overtime Golden Goal Overtime, and the Falcons were determined to make the opportunities count this time. The defense took the ball, brought the ball through the midfield and sent Mario Sarmiento forward once again, after passing THREE defenders Mario found one of Falcon Cove’s two team captains Jose Furman streaking up the right wing for the final and Winning goal. Congratulations to the 2007-2008 Broward County Soccer Champions. This is Coach Chery’s first season as the coach of the soccer team. Their ending record was 11 wins and 1 loss. He did a great job and congratulations once again to the Falcon Cove Soccer Team County Champions 2008!
